TW529.5: Becoming Through Memoir: Some Assembly Required
Instructor: Sharon McLeay, M.A., CJF
This online course treats memoir as a practice of becoming: an intentional, journal-led path through memory that helps writers examine choices, clarify values, and claim a more authentic self. Through memoir instruction and guided journal exercises, students explore purpose, theme, voice, structure, and scene work while uncovering meaningful moments, patterns, and turning points. Students will learn to “journal-pick” existing pages for insight, experiment with voice and perspective, and consider the ethical and safety concerns of writing from life, including practical uses of AI. Downloadable prompts, peer feedback, and instructor guidance support both personal memoir projects and those leading life-story or journaling groups. The course offers a practical process for rethinking the past, deepening self-knowledge, and writing with renewed authenticity.

TW502: The Space Between: Using Poetry to Navigate Life Transitions
Instructor: Elaine Brooks MA, RN, CAPF
Life transitions, both expected and unexpected, can leave us wondering who we are now and what comes next. Changes in work, relationships, health, identity, or life stage can be disorienting, but they can also open the door to new understanding and growth. In this course, you’ll explore the phases of transition and learn how poetry can be used to help navigate change. Through selected poems, reflection, and writing, you’ll experience these practices while learning ways to bring them into your work with groups and clients. You’ll explore how poetry can help identify strengths and values, make meaning of uncertainty, and consider what may be emerging next. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of the transition process and a collection of poems and practices you can use in both your own life and professional practice.
