Ground Rules
This group — CARES!
All students, whether or not in credentials or advanced study training, are asked to agree to these ground rules.
C onfidentiality. Although this is a professional course of study, some of what we’ll be sharing with each other will be personal, and possibly vulnerable. Please honor privacy and confidentiality.
A cceptance. You may or may not agree with all that is said, shared, experienced. Take what’s useful and leave the rest. Please keep your feedback and comments open-hearted, friendly, and at the level of observation rather than advice-giving.
R espect. We’ve got busy lives and different learning styles. However, it is a sign of respect to your peers and teachers to include yourself in discussions early and often. Please also respect the integrity of this work, and each other’s time and process, by keeping your posts on point for the topic.
E xcellence. While individual participation styles (and class requirements) will vary, plan to spend 2-4 hours per week per class, and check in to read/respond to the discussions at least three times a week. It’s part of your own excellence to not feel rushed or overwhelmed every time you log on.
S elf-managagement. Participation in an on-line class is a bit like Goldilock’s comfort — you’re seeking the “just right” balance between “too much” and “not enough.” You’ll seek the balance between “too much” and “not enough” in how often you check in, respond, participate. And you’ll also be mindful of the balance of discussing and reporting on personal experiences and responses while maintaining a professional training focus.
Tuition Policy:
Tuition is payable by credit card (preferred) or check. Space can be held in a class, but registration is not considered final until payment is received.
Non-trainees: $375 per class.
Trainees: $325 per class.
Tuition credits toward unused classes (see: Drop/Add, below) expire after one calendar year.
Drop/Add/Credit/Refund policy:
8-WEEK CLASS
Drop / Add Policy / Credit / Refund Policies
Just as a reminder, our drop/add policy is as follows:
Drop
The Center for Journal Therapy is committed to providing quality professional learning environments. Instructors are flexible and very willing to work with students when short-term absences from class are required for travel, family, school, work, illness or other emergent situations. Work may be requested in advance, or make-up work may be arranged. Sometimes, though, it’s just not the right time. Here is the policy for dropping classes.
- A student may drop any 8-week class with a 100% credit for a future term during the first week of the term.
- A student may drop any 8-week class with a 50% credit for a future term during the second week of the term.
- After the second week, no credit is issued and tuition is forfeited.
- Credits may be used towards any of our classes, retreats or books. All credits expire 12 months after they are issued.
- Drop notifications must be received by Friday 5:00 pm (Mountain time zone) of the second week by email or phone (303-209-9599).
- Because classroom spaces are reserved and cannot be refilled after the term begins, no cash refunds will be made.
- If a student withdraws prior to the start of the term, refunds may be requested and will be subject to a 10% administrative fee or a 100% credit (no admin fee) can be issued.
- As a reminder, the $12 technology fee is non-refundable.
Add
Assuming space is available and any prerequisites are met:
- A student may add any class in the first week of any term.
- A student may add classes in the second week with instructor agreement.
- After the second week, classes are closed.

Maintaining professional focus in online work:
The protocol of the TWInstitute is that in most classes, the actual writing done for personal process assignments is not posted. Instead, what is posted to the discussion boards is a “reflection piece” that stands back from the write itself and reflects on the process of writing it. See How to Write a Reflection Piece, which is posted in each classroom at the start of the term.
Grading policy:
Grades are issued to every student on the following grading scale:
- Pass with honors: 90+% of work is completed with excellence
- Pass: 80+% of work is completed with sufficiency
- Incomplete: 50-80% of course is completed with sufficiency
- Withdraw passing: Less than 50% of course is completed, but with sufficiency
- Not pass: Must retake for credit
- To request your grade, please contact Krista.
Supervised practice policy:
All Certified Journal Facilitator and Certified Journal Therapist trainees must complete a supervised practicum in which therapeutic writing facilitation skills are developed and honed through facilitation planning, written session notes and 1:1 supervision with a TWI supervisor. The cost of supervision is contracted with and paid directly to the supervisor.
Each credentials candidate must complete a minimum of two full, face-to-face Journal to the Self courses (12 hours each) and three face-to-face groups of 8 weeks each based on original curriculum. The amount of supervised practice required is determined through individual assessment but in no case is less than 20 hours for CJT and 30 hours (up to 10 hours of which can be group supervision) for CJF.
For detailed information, download the TWI Student Handbook: Facilitation and Supervision.
